Even dryer lint has a use May 13, 2009 Nick (USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This will definitely start a fire and that is what it is meant to do. I had trouble getting it to work using the attached metal striker (that just came in handy to scrape off the paint), but I used an old serrated steak knife (the kind that does happen to be in our traveling/emergency kit anyway) and I got a fire going very quickly. Using lint from the dryer works very well. I keep a tin filled with lint and a little shredded toilet paper for use as fire starter.
Another reviewer put it wisely when he said that one does have to know how to prepare and start a fire -- it really isn't a magic wand. With a little knowledge (and plenty of sensible care please!) this device works.
It is all about your expectations... May 11, 2007 James Chi (Gaithersburg, MD) 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
I was able to get it to generate a fair amount of sparks, but was disappointed when it failed to light a piece of paper. Later I was able to set fire a bit of toliet paper. I guess what you use for "tinder" make a big difference. So not a flamethrower, but easier and faster than rubbing two stick together. Expect to use the tool with starter material like some toilet paper (which may be useful without the fire!)
Slick little tool November 4, 2007 Michael Kiley II (Lakewood, CO United States) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Not an easy feat to start a fire with flint, but it works as advertised. I did find that the included striker doesnt work as well as a knife.
Swedish Firesteel - firestarter May 10, 2009 Wills CJ7 (Dallas, TX) I put this product in my hunting pack for use when hunting the back country up in Kansas and South Dakota. Works well if you prepare for making a fire. A basic knowledge of building fires is going to be needed if you are going to use this product.
Light My Fire Army Model - comming up short July 26, 2010 AbsolutGSXR Be advised, I have purchased 3 light my fire army steels in new condition from amazon.com and upon inspection after receiving them, found each one of the striking rods to be of different lengths by as much as a half inch difference. The striker has a plain/smooth striking edge when the advertised product picture is shown with a different striker with a jagged edge. Excellent fire steel as an alternative to a misch metal type. I would definitely recommend adding this to your inventory for any type of outdoor use ie: camping, hiking, fishing, or hunting. Very important item to have in an "emergency bag".
